Design and Manufacturing of Dies for Zamak and Magnesium Die Casting
The die is a fundamental element in the die casting of Zamak and Magnesium components. Its design is part of the industrialization process of a component and determines the geometry obtained during injection.
At Gurelan, die design, manufacturing and maintenance are all integrated within the company´s own facilities.
How does Gurelan design die casting dies?
100% of die design is carried out by Gurelan´s technical department, regardless of whether the dies are subsequently manufactured in-house or by strategic suppliers located near its facilities.
This work includes aspects such as:
- The positioning of the sprue.
- The arrangement of the overflows.
- The design of the runner system.
In this way, die design and development are carried out internally by Gurelan´s technical team.
A CAD-CAM methodology is used for this purpose, with SolidWorks, Solid Edge and PowerSHAPE for CAD, and PowerMILL for CAM.
Where are Gurelan´s dies manufactured?
Gurelan has a dedicated toolroom for the manufacturing and maintenance of dies and tooling.
The entire process, from the design of the filling system to the final polishing of the die, can be carried out at its own facilities.
To achieve this, the toolroom is equipped with various production resources, including vertical and horizontal CNC machining centres, electrical discharge machining (EDM) equipment, lathes, milling machines, surface grinding machines, welding equipment, an electric furnace for heat treatments and ultrasonic cleaning equipment.
Die design for electroplated finishes
Gurelan specialises in the design and manufacturing of dies for components intended for electroplated finishes.
For these components, injection quality is essential to ensure proper filling and prevent subsequent surface finishing defects, such as pitting, blistering or cold flow marks.
This specialisation is linked to Gurelan´s experience in manufacturing Zamak and Magnesium components intended for highly demanding surface finishes and decorative coatings.
